Hugo Arcier (1976) lives and works in Paris. As a digital artist, he has worked on the visual effects of several feature films, including Un long dimanche de fiançailles (2004) (A Very Long Engagement) of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. As a video artist, his research is mainly graphical, sometimes close to abstraction. In his videos, he uses a wide range of digital tools, 3D computer images and compositing. His universe takes form from daily life, but he transforms it, distorts it: time expansion, broken down movement, moving shapes, transparency, ghost-like shapes, hypnotic motifs, palindromic editing, refinement of the picture.
Effects and Reflections (2004) Day-to-day consumer objects: a bottle, a fridge... The real world that surrounds us doesn't appear to provide an ideal background for dreams, but it only needs a different way of looking to become malleable and porous. A world of dreams is just a glance away. A girl finds herself transported by the effects of alcohol from one hallucination to another and into another world. Reflections from the container (the bottle) play on the mirror image of the girl; the effects of the contents (alcohol) play on the girl's imagination.Effects and reflections, transparency and thought, image and the imaginary all mix together and transport the spectator into a new visual world. The reality of the world is built up through our perception of the images that the world produces. Where is the illusion? In the eyes of the artist or the spectator? In the image or the object? SOUND Matmos - It seems www.myspace.com/matmos1
Les 5 Siamoises (2006) Mental trip in the mind of a hypnotized woman. Listening to music, we follow the development of a phantasmagorical image. Will this image take its final form before the end? Accept this trip and you will know the answer, but be careful not to be yourself hypnotized. SOUND Wax Tailor - Hypnosis theme www.waxtailor.com
Amateur (2003) A rather blurred pornographic film. Strange idea. Abstract images with an explicit content. The bodies disappear, the meaning evaporates; only the movement returns the spectator to the act that is taking place before him.The moving shapes and frenetic rhythm form and inseparable whole. Lie down and suffer and Lie down and relax are made to be seen in the "Videobox", an installation initiated by Thomas Israël and Jacques Urbanska. The lid of this 1x2m box is a projection screen. The viewer is alone, lying down and watching the screen above him and the sound surrounds the viewer. VIDEOBOX www.projet-percept.be
