Heed 360°

Patricija Gilyte (1972) lives and works in Germany (Munich and Ulm).

Her video works are created as performances for camera, mostly out of doors without an audience. Nature serves as an extension of her studio, with endless space. The features of the landscape and above all the seasons influence the resulting forms. The works are highly metaphoric. The materials used are soft, protective, isolating (plastic foam, blankets, overcoats, rucksacks). There is often a crossover between sculpture and video projection, with selected formal elements of the videos being displayed as sculptures in the exhibition room.

In Heed 360° Patricija Gilyte creates sculptural figures that take shape beneath a fabric surface with a broad beach stretching to the horizon as backdrop. The sea breezes move and mould these organic forms, subjecting them to constant changes. The rushing wind provides a constant, invariable soundtrack. Only upon closer scrutiny is it evident that a human being is concealed under the changing surface of the sculpture. This is the artist herself, moving her body behind a foam mat, slowly pirouetting. But Patricija Gilyte remains hidden at all times, protected by her fabric shell. As in some of her video performances, she uses the soft, pliable material, which drapes itself around the body in thick, dough-like folds, to create biomorphic sculptures against a landscape. --Sonja Wirtz / VIDEONALE
