Andrea Flamini is a multi-disciplinary visual and sound artist.

With The Edge of Things Flamini continues his investigation of our perception of physical and mental spaces. The narrative revolves around the principle that humans have some marginal sensitivity to polarized light, as discovered by Haidinger in 1846 (the naked-eye), while insects instead, and crickets in particular, use polarized vision (P-vision) to ‘investigate’, and aided by their compound eyes (composed of many light-sensitive elements each forming a portion of an image), in many directions at once. With this premise Flamini develops a loose narrative where a character is forced to see with ‘naked eyes’. The result is a video where the camera-eye scans the environment. The camera is waiting to ‘see better’, to ‘see clearly’ to see ‘objectively’. But with no avail. Like an insect ready to react the camera acknowledges when an event is near an end, and tries to prolong it. The film language becomes a syntax of seeing and be seen, a visual syntax of inharmonic overtones, where the frame is more likely to focus on the 'edge of an image', on an 'idealization’ of an ‘image' rather than try to depict an ‘ideal image'. The work becomes a metaphor on how we learn to ‘see’. How we are taught and forced to see objects and realities with the visual language of certainty, rather than an investigative one. [Piero Pala, Italian Experimental Cinema v.1 catalog, 2008]

n4_Coda is a live remix recorded during the Notebook #4 installation at Review Studios. "...days resemble each other like when and where." (Joseph Brodsky) Notebook #4 is the single-channel version of the 5-channel video/sound installation with the same title. The video employs a "database narrative" structure common to most of Flamini's videos. The work explores the idea of becoming blind, both metaphorically and physically, providing an investigation of mental and physical spaces where memory and illusion tend to prevail over reality. The work is loosely based on the writings of poet Joseph Brodsky and the accounts of his detention and confinement.
