The Promise

Boris Eldagsen (1970) lives and works in Berlin and Melbourne. He studied philosophy and fine arts in Cologne, Mainz, Prague and Hyderabad. Eldagsen’s work revolves around the idea of redemption, from the metaphysical to the erotic. His photography, videos and installations are poetic and haunting comments on the human condition. He lectures in Melbourne at the Victorian College of the Arts, Photography Studies College and Melbourne University.

The Show must go on explores a contemporary form for one of the oldest subjects in art history: the crucifixion of Jesus. Informed by the visual language of Dürer and Rembrandt this Jesus is a world champion boxer, fighting to save his title. Step up to the ring for a socially critical and atmospheric video-work about faith, the media and hope. CAST André Scioblowski VOICE Steve Ellery

In The Promise a woman is standing, waiting, her right hand held up, expecting something to appear from above. She shows signs of exhaustion, her eyes water and her hand trembles. On her left shoulder sits a mysterious bird. The Promise raises questions about expectation and salvation. This silent video work is a one-woman-show for renowned German actress Sandra Hüller. CAST Sandra Hüller BIRD WRANGLER Martin Eder
