Red Poppies

Eva Koch lives and works in Copenhagen. Her work varies from the clearly defined, concrete sculptural element to the immaterial seduction of the video image and the invisible interference of the sound work. Her works are generally site-specific, installed in such a way as to relate actively to the space around them, and often with an interactive dimension. Parallel to her sculptural work, Eva Koch has gradually moved into the narrative element in her video work. In her works she especially circles around human conditions, communication and the common denominator. A frequent theme in her video work has been the anonymous individual seen from the perspective of the collective.

Evergreen (2006) is about the power of the group and about the cruelty inherent in us that can mercilessly exclude an individual from the group. This is set in the landscape of the Faeroe Islands. The video pans continuously from the sea by the shore, across the countryside, showing a little village, where some children are throwing stones at a fleeing child. The children's hostile cries and the rapid steps of the fleeing child are accompanied by the sound of birds and the roar of the sea. On a metaphorical level the image sequence may be perceived as a single circular line, simple and precise, that defines an almost archetypical memory, which is enacted among humans at other levels all through their lives. Red Poppies
(2006) The red poppies in the wheat field sway gently in the wind, accompanied by the buzz of insects and bird singing. This beauty is suddenly disturbed by a red shock. Red Poppies is a picture of immediate beauty and fragility. EDITING Niels Plenge
