Stephan Hillerbrand & Mary Magsamen live and work in Houston (Texas). They worked together for over 12 years since meeting in graduate school at Cranbook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills (Michigan) where they both received MFAs. Mary Magsamen is the Curator of Film & Video at the microcinema, Aurora Picture Show and Stephan Hillerbrand teaches in the Digital Media Program at the University of Houston. Their experimental video and installation projects explore perceptions of identity, emotion and family within a uniquely American subjectivity.

Whether (2010) is about the interaction between family members and how one persons emotions can effect the family dynamic as identities of parent, spouse and child, through the metaphor of fog, veil and reveal one another. What appears to be a typical family dinner becomes surreal as a cloud of fog engulfs and distorts the everyday event and fluctuates between memory, reality and dream worlds. ETA (2010) is short for 'estimated time of arrival'. In this video a tension shifts through an intimate enclosed space of a car as rain and thunder dramatically pour down with an impending doom. This constant shift of power, space and emotions reveals a constructed reality in a suburban environment that plays on ideas of film, theater and reality within a relationship.
