The Night of the Moon Has Many Hours

Mauricio Arango (Colombia, 1973) lives and works in Brooklyn and New York as artist and educator. His work has been determined by the violence that has permeated all levels of life in his home country, Colombia. This sense of living in a world marred by forsaken geographies has been a strong motivation for the development of his practice. He is driven by an allegorical sense by which he reinterprets and presents anew the findings of his research. His intention is not that of rewriting or explicitly deviating from an established narrative but of exploring the ways by which the use of symbolic elements can create a different subjectivity.

The Night of the Moon Has Many Hours (2010) shows the nightly ritual of a man who recovers bodies from a river to return them to their mourners. Animal and insect noises, wind-swung vegetation, the black waters, and an impenetrable darkness overtake the viewer’s aural and visual fields to create an air of mystery and apprehension.
