John Gillies (Australia, 1960) is a Sydney based artist who has a long history of working between various audio visual forms and media. He is especially known for his incorporation of particular Sydney based performance genres into an expanded idea of video art. His work is narrative and non-narrative; presented as cinema, installation or live performance. More recently his work has developed a observation aspect or incorporated performers into actual social settings.

Divide (2006) Four white men, a horse, a Chinese opera singer and 2,000 sheep in a landscape with texts from the old testament. CAST Denis Beaubois, Ari Ehrlich, Xu Feng Shan, Matt Millay, Dalisa Pigram, Lee Wilson PRODUCER John Gillies in association with Chili Films SHEEP WRANGLERS Steve Hartup, Jean Marden LOCATION MANAGER Willy Hall

House (2010) 300 empty houses, lie stranded, floating above the ground on thin piers. They are typical Queensland houses: mining residences, army huts, migrant hostels, school rooms, farm houses and suburban homes. Modest, abandoned, lightly constructed; the offer no privacy. Faint sounds are heard through thin walls; nothing is private. They are always a work in progress, to be cut in half, removed, recycled and remade many times over. Even when placed in a living town, they always seem to be part of a transient camping ground laid out over the country.
