Where there is much Light
Lux Aeterna

Jenna Jacopo (Italy 1980) lives and works in Florence (Italy) as visual artist and professional dancer. He graduated in sociology and approached dance when studying in Holland at Codarts-Rotterdam Dance Academy. His artistic production is focused on the meaning of the body and thought as a place of feeling and exposure through form and movement. His works are oriented towards a research of coexistence between the practices and techniques of performing art and those of photography and video.

The Visible Man (2008) was born from a reflection on the image of an anatomical plastic model. The skin of the model is completely transparent and we can see clearly the bones and the inner organs. Our body is visible and accessible externally through the skin, the flesh, but also its volume, the depth, the proximity. The light has not many possibilities to penetrate inside the body. We do not have a visual awareness of our internal organs, their rhythms and psychological processes that keep us alive. Our body in this sense appears absent, obscure, invisible. The video explores the concept of visibility in six chapters, where fuzzy anonymous bodies pass through different surreal places. The central part of the work was shot in the halls of the famous Florence Natural History Museum “La Specola”. The Museum, officially inaugurated in 1775, presents itself as a place of anatomical visibility and exhibits the inside of the human and animal body. In contrast to the static exhibition pieces the dynamic movements of three anonymous bodies reflect on what is visible and what is not. Where there is much Light, the Shadow is deep (2009) The title is a quote from the text of J.W. Goethe "Theory of Colours" (published in 1810). Goethe appreciates that the sensation of complementary colors does not originate physically from the actions of light on our eyes but perceptually from the actions of our visual system. The video is built around the concepts of perception and listening as an area of definition of sense, because everything in the phenomenal world exists only as relativity. Through listening it generates an opening in the body, this expansion takes us out of ourselves by creating multiple references. The work creates a dreamlike dimension where a room is perceived and defined by the slow increase of the chromatic intensity, where listening of a bright black body creates phase dragging away in the time organic forms and colors.
