Flip Flop

Gisela Motta & Leandro Lima (1976) live and work in São Paulo, Brazil. They partnered up when studying Visual Arts at FAAP in São Paulo. While their works are mostly on video, they use several techniques such as photography, performance, sound, objects and also small technological devices. The images in their videos and photographs are constructed by mixing real images with artificial elements, which are brought together in order to bring uncertainty into the viewer’s perceptions and preoccupations. The pieces are ambiguous despite of their apparently documented character.

Hole (2007) contrasting images from small commercial, no brand stores were captured in Sao Paulo and have been applied to the facades of Helsinki, so as to question our perception through the different urban environments produced by these two cultures.

Framed (2007) Images of people in the position of police arrest so common in São Paulo, were applied to Helsinki landscape; the reaction to this foreign element was registered in the video.

Flip Flop (2010) The English suburban (1849-1939), are formed by a series of streets with row houses consistent with one another in architecture, design, and appearance indicating organization and planning, absolutely contrasting with Brazilian’s urban landscapes. Interventions over the houses images where done as well as they have been shuffled in time replaying the urban environment.
