The Diary of the Unknown Consumer

Mattias Härenstam (Sweden, 1971) lives and works in Berlin and Oslo. He works in the fields of video, installation and sculpture. Härenstam studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts (Bergen, Norway) and at Staedelsschule (Frankfurt). Härenstam's work draws partly on autobiography and deals mainly with issues of control (and the loss of it), consumption and the notion of (personal) failure within the modern welfare state. Uncontrollable, chaotic forces lurks just underneath the surface of the well-kept suburban gardens and shopping malls of his universe, sometimes only visible through cracks and rifts and at other times laid bare out in the open. At the core they all are personal investigations of the dark sides of a consumerist psychology.
