Julia Oldham (USA 1979) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She explores insect culture through her performative work. Oldham studies insects by reading about them, watching videos of their behaviors, observing live creatures in the wild and in zoos, and talking to beekeepers and scientists. She then contemplates the odd gestures of bugs and brings their language of movement into her world with a collision of movement, sound and video. Her work is concerned with playful anthropomorphization; it is a meditation on the fantasy that humans and invertebrates have a shared set of experiences, accessible through rhythms, patterns, gestures and a relationship with the environment. Oldham received a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Chicago in 2005.

The Timber (2009) began with a summer residency in the Ferguson Timber in Marshalltown, Iowa in 2008, where the artist observed, researched, and performed alongside prairie and savannah insects. The project continued through the next three seasons, exploring the climactic life moments of insects in their natural environment. COMISSIONED by Art in General, New York, NY.
